An Advocate for Workplace Fairness and Civil Rights |
||
|
Katie Ervin Carlson grew up in Eldridge, Iowa. After graduating from high school she headed west and stopped in Iowa City, where she became a fervent Hawkeye fan and academic standout, earning a bachelor’s degree in communications studies and political science.
Inspired in part by courtroom dramas, Katie knew from a very young age that she wanted to be a lawyer. She pursued her dream at Drake University Law School where her coursework included civil rights law and history. She became immediately passionate about advocating for and protecting the rights of people who otherwise don’t have a voice. In addition to graduating with high honors and as a member of Order of the Coif, she learned on the job as a clerk for Roxanne Conlin & Associates and as a student attorney for Drake University Law School Legal Clinic Middleton Center for Children’s Rights. |
She launched her career as a civil rights and employment attorney in 2006. She has represented clients in all facets of employment and civil rights law. In fact, she serves as co-counsel on the largest racial class action case ever tried in Iowa.
Outside the courtroom, Katie continues to advocate. As a working mother, she understands the dilemma women face between career and child care. In 2010, she helped write and advocated for legislation in Iowa that would require employers to make reasonable accommodation for breast-feeding mothers. Katie believes that fighting for and protecting the rights of those who are or have beens victims of discrimination is key to upholding the rights of all. |
